Former Hawk Krajewski on fire for Panthers

Hendricken product Jarek Krajewski’s bat has been getting quite a workout this spring, as the Plymouth State junior has become the go-to guy for offensive firepower for the Panthers.

The former Hawk’s eye at the plate has been that of an eagle, laying waste to opposing pitching with a scintillating .523 batting average, placing him more than 150 points ahead of the next qualifying batter on the team.

Additionally, he is currently leading Plymouth State in several other hitting categories, including doubles (10), RBIs (19) and slugging percentage (.723).

The foundation of this hot streak at the dish was laid during the team’s early-season trip to Florida last month where in 11 games Krajewski went 22-for-40 with five doubles and 14 runs driven in, highlighted by an 8-for-9 afternoon on St. Patrick’s during which Plymouth State swept Edgewood in a doubleheader that saw him drive home seven.

Once he returned from the Sunshine State, he continued to shine, stringing together a 4-for-6 performance that saw him score four runs in a 26-9 dismantling of Daniel Webster last Thursday.

Right now, the only thing that has been able to stop Krajewski has been New England’s notoriously fickle weather as the Panther nine had little choice but to kick up their heels last weekend, the end result of a postponement of last Saturday’s scheduled twinbill with UMass-Dartmouth.

The pair of contests against the Corsairs has been rescheduled for this Sunday, 24 hours after the team’s originally-scheduled doubleheader with Rhode Island College.

Heidel standing out for Anchorwomen

Pilgrim alumna Betsy Heidel endured a 2015 campaign that saw the Rhode Island College women’s lacrosse team lose every contest, but this spring she has seen the Anchorwomen make a long-awaited return to the win column.

The victory came in RIC’s second game of the season, an 11-6 upending of Daniel Webster on March 15 that saw the former Patriot attacker score four goals to pace the offense.

The Anchorwomen have won two more games since, defeating Mitchell, 13-3, in a lightning-shortened affair on March 17 and a 12-6 doubling up of Becker on March 26, with Heidel scoring twice in each contest.

However, there are immediately apparent signs that the team is still a work in progress, as evidenced by a 22-0 whitewash by Salve Regina last Thursday and a 17-3 dismantling by Keene State in RIC’s Little East opener on Saturday.

Despite the more recent setbacks, the Anchorwomen are currently a respectable 3-4, with Heidel’s 11 goals placing her in a tie for second on the team.
