TIRES & RIMS STOLEN

On Dec. 14 at 7:33 a.m., Officer Scott Chanthaphouvong was dispatched to meet with a man who had contacted Warwick Police in reference to a larceny complaint.

The man said he parked his car around 4 p.m. on Dec. 13 in front of his apartment under the floodlight and went to bed at 1 a.m. At 6:30 a.m., he said he noticed his car was on cinder blocks and his four tires and rims were missing. He described the tires on his 2016 Mazda 6 as 19-inch special alloy rims and said the replacement value would be about $4,500 to $5,000. He said the lug nuts were also taken. He indicated he would like to press charges against those responsible for the theft.

Chanthaphouvong said it should be noted there were witnesses. He said he had Warwick Mall and Target check their security cameras to see if there were any suspicious vehicles in the area at that time. No suspects.

SHOPLIFTING

On Dec. 12 at 3:28 p.m., Officer Eric Lima was dispatched to the loss prevention office at J. C. Penney, 400 Bald Hill Road, for the report that an adult female was in custody for shoplifting.

Upon arrival and meeting with loss prevention, Lima was advised the female subject, later identified as Miranda McGraw, 19, of 10 Bayamo Lane, Cranston, entered Sephora and selected a Makeup Forever pencil and a Kat Von D lipstick. She reportedly concealed the pencil inside the front of her sweatshirt pocket. She then purchased two other items before leaving Sephora, at which time she removed the pencil from her sweatshirt and placed it in the Sephora bag with the purchased items. She was then seen exiting the store, passing all points of sale without making an attempt to pay for the concealed merchandise. McGraw was approached by loss prevention and escorted back inside the store, where the concealed merchandise, in the amount of $39, was recovered.

McGraw was taken into custody and transported to Warwick Police headquarters, where she was processed and issued a District Court summons for the charge of Misdemeanor Shoplifting before being released.

DUI & REFUSAL

On Dec. 13 at 2:16 a.m., Sergeant John Choquette was on routine patrol traveling westbound in the area of Carpenter Street, when he reportedly observed a vehicle traveling at 78 mph in a posted 35 mph zone. He immediately turned around and followed the vehicle, watching it go through a red light at the intersection of Main Avenue and West Shore Road, and said it operated recklessly, “so that the lives and safety of other motorists were in danger, as well as my own.”

After activating his emergency lights and siren in an attempt to stop the vehicle, the vehicle refused and instead made a right hand turn onto Stone Avenue without using a turn signal before eventually coming to a stop a quarter-mile down Stone Avenue. Choquette said he was able to identify the driver and lone occupant as Elizabeth A. Soares, 35, of 15 Higgins Street, Smithfield, who told him she was heading home and had to go to the bathroom. When asked if she knew why Choquette had stopped her, she mumbled something, but all Choquette could make out was “light.” When asked if she knew how fast she was going, she did not reply. However, she did provide her license, registration and proof of insurance when requested. While speaking with Soares, Choquette said he detected a moderate odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from her breath and observed her eyes to be bloodshot and watery and her speech to be slurred and mumbled.

After another officer arrived on scene for backup, Soares was asked to exit the vehicle and submit to a series of standardized field sobriety tests, to which she complied. During the tests, Soares was observed to lose her balance, miss heel-to-toe on all steps, sway from side to side and put her foot down before being told to do so. Choquette then advised he deemed her unfit to safely operate a motor vehicle and arrested her for Suspicion of Driving Under the Influence of an Intoxicating Liquor and/or Drugs. She was taken into custody and transported to Warwick Police Department headquarters, while another officer remained on scene to await a tow for the vehicle.

Once at headquarters, Soares refused to submit to a chemical breath test. She was charged with DUI/Drugs/Alcohol/1st Offense – B.A.C. Unknown and Reckless Driving/Drag Racing/Eluding Police – 1st Offense. She was also issued summonses for the following: Speeding – 78 mph in 35 mph Zone; Obedience to Traffic Control Device for running the red light; Turn Signal Required; and Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test (1st Offense). Soares was later released to her boyfriend.
