DUI CHARGE

A motorist who reportedly answered a police officer with, “I had a lot, more than enough,” after being asked how many drinks he had was recently arrested on a charge of driving under the influence.

Officer Derek Mourato reports traveling north on Post Road at approximately 1 a.m. on Aug. 15 when he observed a vehicle swerving, accelerating and slowing erratically, with a driver who appeared to be hugging his steering wheel while not wearing a seatbelt.

After initiating a traffic stop, Mourato identified the operator as Kyle Monastesse, 31, of 65 Stillwater Road in Smithfield. Upon speaking with Monastesse, the officer reports observing that his speech was slurred, his eyes were bloodshot and watery, with a strong odor of alcohol emanating from his body.

Monastesse is said to have told the officer he had been drinking after his shift with co-workers.

Mourato reports he requested that another unit respond, and asked Monastesse to exit his vehicle and to submit to a series of standardized field sobriety tests. Monastesse is said to have consented to the tests, and failed them.

Monastesse was transported to police headquarters. He is charged with driving under the influence (first offense) and refusal to submit to a chemical test, and was issued citations for not wearing a seatbelt and laned roadway violations.

SHOPLIFTING

CHARGE

A man police say actively resisted and assaulted Macy’s loss prevention officers was recently charged with shoplifting, assault, and trespassing.

At approximately 6 p.m. on Aug. 18, Officers Walter Larson and David Boardman were dispatched to Warwick Mall, where they found Sao Te, 43, of West Warwick in custody of loss prevention.

The officers were reportedly informed that Te had been observed entering Macy’s, walking to the men’s polo shirt section, and selecting two shirts off the rack, valued at $49.25.

He then allegedly concealed them under his jacket before running to the exit without making any attempts to pay.

After he passed the store’s security sensors, store personnel are said to have made contact with and attempted to detain Te. He reportedly began to struggle with them, pushing one member to the ground and causing minor injuries before being taken back into the store.

Statements from store workers and two DVDs of surveillance footage were collected. Te was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters without incident. There he was charged with one count each of simple assault, shoplifting, and willful trespassing. He was additionally issued a no-trespass warning for Warwick Mall.

OUTSTANDING

WARRANT

The driver of a car who police say appeared to be texting while transporting a passenger who was nine months pregnant and potentially having contractions was recently detained on an outstanding bench warrant.

While on routine patrol, Officer Walter Larson reports observing a 2000 Nissan Altima traveling east while its driver was manipulating his cellphone. After checking the vehicle’s registration and finding the plates did not match the car, a traffic stop was initiated.

Larson identified Stephen Louis, 21, of 69 Bellevue Ave., Apt. #3 in Providence, as the operator of the vehicle, and learned that he has a suspended license and a warrant for a failure to appear for arraignment.

Louis stated that his passenger, his girlfriend, was pregnant and having contractions 15 minutes apart. Warwick fire and rescue responded soon after, but she is said to have refused treatment.

Louis was taken into custody without incident, transported to headquarters, and issued a summons for driving after denial, suspension, or revocation of a license (first offense). He was also issued a verbal warning for the traffic violations, and a court date was set for the outstanding charges.

LARCENY

The discovery of nearly $1,000 worth of tools and equipment missing from a Country Club Drive garage recently led a homeowner to file a larceny report.

Officer Joseph DeDonato was dispatched to the scene and met with the victim, who stated that on Aug. 12 at approximately 2:30 p.m., his wife returned home to find their garage door would not work properly. She found the door’s manual release had been pulled without explanation. Upon entering several items were found to be missing, including an air compressor, weed eater, leaf blower, chain saw, and cordless drill.

It is believed that the theft occurred possibly on Aug. 11 or the following day. Neighbors advised that they had not observed anything unusual within the days leading up to the incident. It was noted that this was the fifth larceny from a garage involving tools within the four days prior that DeDonato was familiar with.

At this time, there are no suspects or witnesses.
