SMOKED OUT
Officer Hovsep Sarkisian reported stopping a car that was weaving in and out of its travel lane on Route 15 around 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 6. He said he followed the car onto I-95 South and then pulled it over. He reported that, “a heavy cloud of marijuana smoke emanated from the vehicle. I shined my light into the cloudy vehicle and observed that there was … a passenger in the front passenger seat.” He said he asked that passenger if there was anything in the car he should know about and she said, “Yea, I’ve got a blunt,” and then handed it to him. He said he asked her if she had any more and she said, “Yea, I have a bag of weed in my purse,” and then handed that over to him. He said he didn’t find any other weed in the car but did find out that the woman driving the car had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in District Court. He said he arrested both women and took them to headquarters where they were processed and then held for arraignment. The passenger, identified as Chiyen Le, 22, of 595 Pontiac Ave. in Cranston, was charged with possession of marijuana and released with a summons. The driver, identified as Sokdy Peak, 27, of 157 Bernice Ave. in Woonsocket, was held for the bail commissioner and later released on $3,000 surety bail.

SHOPLIFTING
Officer Britton Kelly arrested a Cranston man on Jan. 4 after loss prevention at the Wal-Mart on Post Road told him they saw the man take four car batteries and load them into a carriage before taking a comforter and two pillows and placing them over the batteries and then walking out of the store without stopping to pay for the goods. He was stopped outside and held for police. Ulysses Leonard Karpedah, 30, of 414 Park Ave. in Cranston was charged with stealing $428.68 worth of merchandise at headquarters and later released with a summons.
Kyle Paquette, 33, of 18 Brewer Ct. in New London, Conn., was charged with stealing four items worth $118 from the Bath & Body Works store in the Warwick Mall on Jan. 4. He was later released from headquarters with a summons.
Nelson Byron, 22, of 1312 Elmwood Ave. in Providence was charged with shoplifting, obstructing police and arrested on two outstanding warrants on Jan. 6 after loss prevention at the Sears store in the Rhode Island Mall told police two women and a man were in the store that appeared to be planning to walk out with a television without paying for it. Police were waiting outside when they heard that a suspect had left the store with the television and was being chased by store employees. They were arrested after a short scuffle in the parking lot. Officer Quentin Tavares said the suspect initially said his name was Nelson Bermudez and he swore at them and was very uncooperative as they were arresting him. He said they later learned that his real last name was Byron and there were two outstanding warrants for him. Byron was charged at headquarters and then transported to the ACI to be held without bail.

LARCENIES
A West Warwick woman told police she was shopping at the Price Rite store on Bald Hill Road on Jan. 4 and had her purse in her carriage and it was taken from the carriage while her back was turned. The management told police they had no surveillance in the area where the woman was shopping and had no idea of a suspect. The woman said two Social Security cards, for herself and her son, were in the purse, along with her medical cards, debit card, checkbook, a Kindle Nook and a digital camera. No witnesses.
A Warwick woman told police she returned to her vehicle on Summerland Road around 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 1 and found the rear window of her vehicle smashed. She said a $150 jacket and a $100 purse were missing from the car. She said nothing else was taken from the car, including other purses. He said she did find a screwdriver on the driver’s seat she never saw before. She said she picked it up and then put it back, which would have compromised any fingerprints that were on it. There were no suspects or witnesses.
Officer Eric Lima reported going to the Hampton Inn on Post Road for a report of a Toyota Highlander left sitting on milk crates with all four wheels missing on Jan. 3. He said the lug nuts were scattered around and the vehicle precariously on three milk crates. The manager told Lima he last saw the vehicle with wheels around 2:45 p.m. the day before. No suspects or witnesses.

DUI AND REFUSAL
Officer John Curley reported he went to the Hooter’s parking lot around 9:25 p.m. on Dec. 30 for a report of a suspected drunk driver on Airport Road. He said he found a woman behind the wheel of a Jeep who smelled of alcohol and appeared to be drunk. He said he found a snow-free area for her to take a field sobriety test and she failed it. He said he asked the woman if she would take a preliminary breath test and she agreed. He said she blew a .188 blood alcohol content on the test and was taken to headquarters where she refused to take another breath test. Jennifer Lee Clark, 48, of 9178 Water Tupelo Rd. in Fort Myers was charged with DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.
