Police investigating the death and suicide of man and wife

Posted

On Monday, shortly after 12:04 a.m., Warwick Police responded to 161 Armstrong Ave. for a 911 hang-up call. A man called 911 from the residence and said, “There are two dead people,” and then hung up.

Officers entered the residence shortly after that and found two deceased people in a bedroom. Based on information at the scene, it appeared to be a murder-suicide. Both victims were found in bed with gunshot wounds.

Police said it appears that the male victim called 911, then shot his wife while she was in bed and then turned the gun on himself. Officers said they did find notes in the residence indicating a suicide. Police will not release any other information while they continue to investigate. Police said autopsies would be conducted on the victims to confirm cause of death as a matter of procedure. Next of kin, two adult children, have been notified.

The victims are identified as William Liebrich, 52, and his wife, Colleen Liebrich, 50, both of the same address.

The incident is under investigation by the Warwick Police Detective Division, but people close to the situation have said that the retired firefighter’s wife was terminally ill.

William Liebrich was a graduate of Warwick Veterans High School and Colleen was a graduate of Toll Gate High School. Police said Detective Captain Robert Nelson might have more information to offer later today.
