Holliman helps bring meaning to Memorial Day

Posted

Memorial Day was observed Friday at Holliman School in a ceremony that included the posting of the colors by the Warwick Fire Department Honor Guard, flag raising, playing of the National Anthem, songs by the school chorus, tribute to the late Tony Lena, a long time Holliman and Pilgrim High community supporter, wreath laying and comments from officials. PTA officer Jennifer Bryson along with Lorrie Goralski and others worked to make the even possible.

Rep. Joseph McNamara thanked the students for honoring his father, a World War II veteran who fought in Okinawa. Rep. Camille Vella-Wilkinson also talked about World War II and how the military called on people to have their dogs take on roles in the effort to win the war. She said 40,000 dogs were drafted to serve as sentries, sniff out explosives and serve in other capacities. Acting Mayor Joseph Solomon told the students “you are our future” and asked them to never forget the sacrifices made by those that have brought us to where we are today. (Warwick Beacon photos)
