How Do You Stand Out?

Author aims to teach children about their talents

Growing up, Scott Jablonski didn’t know that other kids didn’t make up songs in their heads the way that he did.

“I didn’t realize that’s what I was doing,” Jablonski said. “Where’d that come from? I always had that creative juice for writing and coming up with rhymes, specifically.”

That experience helped inspire Jablonski’s first book, released on Sept. 30, titled “How Do You Stand Out?” The book is aimed towards children, though Jablonski said that its lessons are applicable for anyone.

A Cranston native and teacher at St. Rose of Lima School in Warwick, Jablonski first got into education when he realized that he found that helping people learn their computer software was “really gratifying.”

Using that and a longtime love for music, Jablonski has since given interactive presentations and sang to elementary schools statewide alongside teaching in Warwick and Westerly.

Writing a book, though, was something that Jablonski had wanted to do to help spread the messages he has sung about to classrooms.

“This is really kind of an invitation to find out what you’re good at, develop it and then share it with the world,” Jablonski said. “Because when you’re around people who are passionate about what they do, you just become drawn into that environment.”

The root of the book’s idea is an acrostic poem Jablonski came up with, with its acronym being STAND OUT. The messages that those letters stand for, according to Jablonski, include messages from self-esteem to respect for others, with an overall theme aiming to improve habits.

Jablonski said that the acronym, which he came up with while driving back from a class, helped drive his philosophy, along with

“This book is an extension of all of my experiences, with music, with literature, with poetry, with education, with character, it’s just kind of a blend of all these things I’m passionate about,” Jablonski said. “So really, it’s an extension of me.”

Throughout the book, Jablonski uses a minimalistic artistic style, making use of apps such as Canva to self-illustrate the story.

Jablonski also wants children to read the book with parents, grandparents and other relatives in order to receive help in figuring out some of their talents.

“Share it with your kids,” Jablonski said. “They’re going to be showing some talents at a very young age. There’s going to be some things that they’re just really, really good at and they really love to do. Those are the seeds of greatness for those kids moving forward, and I think it’s important for adults to pay attention to those things and really let kids know that some things they do are a bit special.”

The process of sharing the book, according to Jablonski, is something that is meaningful to him, and helps give meaning to his book.

“It gives me joy when people are sharing this with one another, consuming and reading this, and it’s making a difference in their lives,” Jablonski said.

Jablonksi is working on his second book, which will include 365 different positive quotes for each day of the year. He envisions “How Do You Stand Out?” as the first book of a series focused around the STAND OUT acronym, although the work on those books is yet to begin.

“How Do You Stand Out?” can be purchased on Amazon for $14.99. An accompanying audiobook sung by Jablonski can be found on Apple Music, Spotify and Amazon Music.
