Just good government

Posted

To the Editor:

Mr. Sarno (Beacon 9/6) reproaches local candidates for advocating, in his words, a socialist agenda. In my opinion these progressive candidates will work to improve our community without resorting to cronyism and tired old solutions.

I am voting for Calkin, Carbone and Regunberg because they will fight for a decent minimum wage, affordable healthcare, good schools, respect for the environment, and fiscal responsibility.

Socialism? Not at all; just good government.

Socialists should be shunned as if they were child molesters. They are a threat to any hard working man/woman alive. Your support of socialism is repugnant.

Amen. What have a socialist ever done for us? Apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the socialists ever done for us?

I don't think I have ever heard of socialism on the same level as sexual predators. Are you suggesting we prosecute, jail and leave in the general population of prison all socialists? Maybe we can send them to the Catholic Church for rehabilitation?

Ms. Greenwald: One can not "...fight for a decent minimum wage" while simultaneously advocating for "fiscal responsibility". The two are mutually exclusive. Workers who choose to work for private employers mutually agree to a wage, working conditions, hours, benefits, etc. Unless there is fraud or other deceit on the part of either party, which can be legally aggrieved, government should have no role in this process. I am also unclear how agents of the government will "...fight for respect for the environment." People either respect the environment (hopefully) or they do not. We do not need the heavy hand of government dictating what we will and will not "respect". Why not simply say "We need bigger, costlier, more intrusive government" and be done with it.
