Keep pedaling until you’re 100…maybe even more

A Disco Duck – that’s his name -  was riding his “Cadillac”- that’s his bike -  on West Shore Road Easter afternoon.

There was no way of missing him. Colorful stuffed animals, including several ducks (naturally) were zip tied to the handle bars and frame of his bicycle. He wore equally colorful clothes. Baskets straddling the rear fender were packed with clothing, perhaps a poncho and gear if the weather turned ducky. We didn’t ask.

“Well, that’s my character name,” he said revealing no more. But he was forthcoming on where he was going and why his bicycle is so brilliantly decorated. If it wasn’t for the lack of makeup, Duck could have been a clown. He certainly had a twinkle in his eye and a smile to qualify for the role.

The answer to his flamboyancy makes perfect sense.

“The way people drive you want to make sure they see you,” he said.

On Easter Day, Duck pedaled north from Wickford to Hoxsie Four Corners in Warwick and then south on West Shore Road to Oakland Beach to meet friends. What about an Easter Day gathering with relatives, perhaps brothers and sisters? “Oh yes,” Duck said to brothers and sisters.

“They have normal names,” he said disclosing nothing more.

Duck said he’s a Jack of all trades and works a number of jobs when they pop up from cleaning dishes to yard work.

“I go by my passions,” Duck said of his collection of stuffed animals and discarded items retrieved from the side of the road. Strings of florescent beads swayed from his neck. Aside from colorful things, Duck identified pedaling as his passion.

“I just ride along,” he said, “and I’ll keep doing it until I’m 100 and can’t do it any more.”
