No parade, but Memorial Day observance planned for Monday

Posted

First the first time in many years, Boy and Girl Scouts, dance studios, high school bands, Veterans of Foreign Wars, members of the National Guard and local officials won't be marching down West Shore Road to observe Memorial Day this coming Monday.

The parade usually forms in the parking lot of Bishop Hendricken High School and ends in the park next to Veterans Junior High School, where there is a review stand and officials talk about the meaning of the day.

The Warwick Veterans Council had every intention of conducting a parade this year, council president Anthony Rodrigues said Wednesday. Then a number of the council members including him were stricken by health problems. Rodrigues was hospitalized in March and has since been discharged.

But the absence of a parade doesn't mean the day will go unnoticed. An observance celebrating the 150th anniversary of Memorial Day will be held by Acting Mayor Joseph Solomon, Councilman Timothy Howe and state Representative Camille Vella-Wilkinson with the Rhode Island Military Organization on Monday at 9 a.m. at Veterans Park in front of the school.

“From the time of the Revolutionary War, the men and women of Warwick have played a vital role in defining our nation,” Solomon said in a release issued Wednesday. “Forsaking the comforts of home, they left family and friends behind to protect not only United States citizens but those in peril around the world. It is only right that we pay tribute to those who laid down their lives in the ultimate sacrifice for freedom and prosperity around the globe.”

The event is open to all, and parking will be available at the Veterans Junior High School parking lot.

Rodrigues is grateful of the observance. He believes this year is an anomaly.

“It will go on," he said. "I’m sure someone will pick it up or I will get back into it.”

Not having a Memorial Day Parade for the "First time in many years", is a disgraceful slap in the face of the Veterans who risked their lives for our freedom.

I don't know who is to blame.

    But it's disgraceful.

I apologize to the Veterans and agree with acting-Mayor Joe Solomon who said "It is only right that we pay tribute..." but the best tribute I believe we could offer is a parade. We should have.

    Happy Spring everyone.

"I don't know who is to blame."

Clearly the make-believe mayor did not read the article above, which states: 'The Warwick Veterans Council had every intention of conducting a parade this year, council president Anthony Rodrigues said Wednesday. Then a number of the council members including him were stricken by health problems.'

    "[I]t's disgraceful."

Yes, it is disgraceful that the make-believe mayor would accuse the Veterans Council of a "slap in the face" when its members have legitimate medical issues that they are addressing. His disgraceful accusation is an insult to the Veterans Council and all of the servicemen and servicewomen they represent.

All Warwick veterans should remember the make-believe mayor's shameful behavior when they join the thousands of voters who will overwhelmingly reject his candidacy again this year.

How pathetic Rick that you would even politicize a parade for veterans. Incorrectly as usual. As Crickee correctly pointed out if you read the article it stated there were underlying reasons. The only slap in the face to veterans is from you. A failing candidate who pretends to care about them in the name of "scoring political points" . Just when it seems you've hit your lowest, you prove everyone wrong.

It really is disgraceful, isn't it, Scal? The guy can't even read a whole news article before firing off another wrong comment.

I can't wait for Joe Solomon to wipe the proverbial floor with the make-believe mayor so we all can witness a second spectacular failure by this unqualified, lying, fraudulent tax delinquent.
