A firefighter is never off-duty. Our Chief of Training Mike Mernick was in Providence the other night enjoying some hot wieners with his wife after attending a show. It came to his attention that a house was on fire. His instincts took over and he ran into the burning house and assisted two Providence policeman with saving a mother and her two children from the top floor. Strong work Mike, you’ve done the WFD and our city proud!! I’ll be treating you to all the wieners you can eat very soon!!

Another off-duty Warwick Firefighter saves a life!!! Training and instincts to save lives just kick in. Strong work Firefighter Doug Barlow, we’re proud of you.
This afternoon I presented a citation to Deputy Chief Michael Mernick of the Warwick Fire Department for his heroism for rescuing a family from a Providence house fire last weekend. We also surprised him with hot wieners since Chief Mernick never had the chance to eat them that night. I want to thank Gel’s Kitchen for suppling a delicious lunch for Chief Mernick (and a whole bunch of us) for his heroic actions!
