MISDEMEANOR REVOKED LICENSE

At 6:24 p.m., Feb. 10, Warwick Police Officer Johnathan H. DiPietro was on routine patrol in the area of 1056 Post Road when he witnessed a motor vehicle crash.

Both involved vehicles pulled onto Rosewood Avenue. DiPietro activated his emergency lights and spolke to the drivers.

He identified the driver of the 2011 Ford Focus, which had rear-ended the other vehicle, as May E. Sorlien, 35, of 40 Spicebush Trail, Narragansett. Police determined Sorlien’s driver’s license was suspended, and this would be her fourth charge for driving without a license.

Sorlien was arrested and transported to Warwick Police Headquarters. She was charged with Driving With Suspended/Revoked/Canceled License (fourth offense, a misdemeanor). Her vehicle was towed from the scene.

Sorlien also received a citation for Intervals Between Vehicles. She was later released with a Third District Court summons.

DUI CRASH

Around 7:40 p.m., Feb. 10, Warwick Police responded to the area of Bald Hill Road and East Avenue for the report of an erratic operator.

Dispatch advised responding officers that a white BMW ran a red light at approximately five miles per hour and nearly veered off the road. A witness also reported that the vehicle was traveling north on Bald Hill Road and “had almost hit other vehicles,” according to the arrest report.

Warwick Police Officer Nathaniel Gray responded to the scene after dispatch advised the suspect vehicle had rear-ended another vehicle.

The witness followed the suspect vehicle with their hazard lights flashing. The vehicles were located on New London Avenue “traveling at a very low rate of speed.”

Gray initiated a traffic stop after watching the suspect car veer off the side of the road multiple times.

“It should be noted that the suspect vehicle continued to travel at a low rate of speed and took a long period of time to come to a stop,” Gray wrote. “The traffic light turned red and the suspect vehicle came to a stop. I exited my cruiser and made contact with the operator, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle.”

Police identified the driver as Joanne A. Mortimer, 65, of 34 Mather Ave., Cranston.

When Gray made contact, the vehicle had been parked in the left northbound lane. He asked Mortimer to put the vehicle in park.

“Mortimer appeared to be confused as I spoke with her,” Gray wrote in the arrest report.

Her eyes were bloodshot and watery, and speech was slurred, according to police.

“Mortimer stated that she was unaware that she had been involved in an accident,” Gray wrote.

More police arrived on scene.

Police asked Mortimer to submit to a series of standardized field sobriety tests. She refused. Police asked again, and she declined again.

Police asked if she took any prescribed medications, and Mortimer allegedly told them that they were “not privileged to that information.”

“From the witnesses statements, my observation of Mortimer operating her vehicle, and my personal encounter with Mortimer, I deemed that Mortimer was unfit to operate a motor vehicle safely at this time,” Gray wrote. “Mortimer then attempted to walk away from officers and was unsteady on her feet.”

She was arrested and transported to Warwick Police Headquarters. Mortimer was asked to consent to a chemical breath test, but declined.

Mortimer was charged with DUI of Liquor (BAC unknown, first offense). She was cited for Failure to Stop for Accident Resulting in Damage to Attended Vehicle, Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test (first offense), No Insurance, Obedience to Traffic Control Devices, Intervals Between Vehicles and Laned Roadway Violations. She was later released to the custody of a sober adult.

DUI

Around 12:20 a.m., Feb. 11, Warwick Police Officer Frank P. Matarese was traveling northeast on Post Road near Elmwood Avenue on patrol when he started following a white Mercedes Benz C300. The car began drifting right and over-correcting left several times, according to the arrest report.

Matarese initiated a traffic stop and identified the driver as Tammy Franca, 46, of 17 Cantaberry Lane, Coventry. In the arrest report, he noted the driver allegedly had bloodshot, watery eyes and “delayed response” to his questions. She also allegedly had some difficulty producing the requisite paperwork.

Matarese returned to his cruiser and requested a second officer on the scene while he conducted a Driving Under the Influence investigation.

Police asked Franca to submit to a series of standardized field sobriety tests. She  said “no problem.” Following the tests, she was arrested and transported back to Warwick Police Headquarters. She was asked to consent to a chemical breath test, but refused.

According to the arrest report, she allegedly admitted to drinking two beers at the Black Oak bar in Coventry around 11 p.m.

Franca was charged with DUI of Liquor (BAC unknown, first offense) and issued a citation for Refusal to Submit to Chemical Test (first offense).

SHOPLIFTING CONSPIRACY

Around 4:21 p.m., Feb. 11, Warwick Police responded to Walmart at 650 Bald Hill Road for the report of a shoplifting incident. Upon arrival, dispatch advised Warwick Police Officer Sara L. Goes that the store’s asset protection investigator had two women in the office, held for shoplifting.

Store management wanted to press criminal charges and issue both women No Trespass Orders. Police identified the two women as India A. Johnson, 25, of 9 Tanglewood Court, West Warwick, and Dekyrah D. Smith, 18, of 25 Waverly St., Apt. 1, Providence.

“Both females were emotional, but cooperative,” Goes wrote in the arrest report.

According to store security, the women were concealing items in their large purses and jackets. They recovered the merchandise after the pair allegedly passed all points of purchase, but made no attempt to pay. The store estimated the value of the items taken at $371.41 before tax. According to police, “both Smith and Johnson conspired to commit the crime of shoplifting by working together to select and conceal the items on their person and in their bags.”

Both women were arrested and each charged with two misdemeanors: Shoplifting and Conspiracy.
