Roundup: Toll Gate gets playoff wins on court, ice

The Toll Gate girls basketball team made the trip to North Providence in a Division III playoff battle on Tuesday and escaped with a 50-48 victory to advance to the semifinals.

Adeline Areson had a huge outing, finishing with 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way. Dulce Garcia finished with 10 points in the win while Amanda Preston added seven.

The Titans will take on top-seeded Narragansett in the semis on Saturday afternoon. The Mariners handed Toll Gate a pair of losses in the regular season.


BOYS BASKETBALL

Rogers 58, Pilgrim 38

The Vikings handed the Pats a loss in the Division II prelims last week at Rogers.

Carter Clifton ended the season on a high note, leading the team with 18 points scored. Dylan Vale scored 13 points in the loss.


BOYS HOCKEY

TG-EG 4, MSC 2

The visiting Toll Gate-East Greenwich boys hockey co-op pulled off a big upset over Mount St. Charles in the Division I play-in game last week to advance to this weekend’s quarterfinals against defending champion Bishop Hendricken.

Garrett Carney and Cooper Grossguth scored to give TG-EG an early 2-0 lead. Jack Keirnan and Chase Birmingham also found the back of the net to hold off a late Mount push. Mike Tober recorded three assists in the win while goalie Wyatt Gelzhiser racked up 36 saves.


COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS

Paquette shines in RIC loss

Junior guard Deyshawn Tengbeh (East Providence, R.I.) scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Rhode Island College men’s basketball team saw their season come to an end in an 83-68 loss at No. 11 Keene State in the semifinals of the 2024 Little East Championship at Spaulding Gymnasium on Thursday night.

A couple of three-pointers by freshman guard  and Hendricken grad Mike Paquette (Cranston, R.I.) helped lead the fifth-seeded Anchormen to an early, 19-11, lead with 12:20 left in the first half.

The top-seeded Owls would embark on a 20-5 run over an 8:07 time span to rack up a 41-32 lead at halftime.

A three-point shot from KSC junior guard Octavio Brito (Lincoln, R.I.) gave the Owls a 17-point lead, 57-40, with 12:45 remaining in the contest.

The Anchormen would try their best to close the gap, climbing within 11 points, 74-63, with 2:24 left tin the game, but would get no closer as the Owls advanced to the tourney finals.

Senior forward Ousmane Kourouma (Woonsocket, R.I.) scored 10 points and secured 19 rebounds for his 19th double-double of the season.

Sophomore guard Isaiah Dahl (Cornelius, Ore.) with finished 11 points.

Oliver, Sainristil shine at MIT

Sophomore Haley Oliver (Coventry, R.I.) set a new program record in the mile (5:07.26), surpassing her own previous personal best, the Rhode Island College women’s track and field team competed at the NCAA Div. III New England Championship, held at The Track at New Balance on Sunday afternoon.

Oliver finished 12th in the mile.

Junior Samantha Sainristil (Cranston, R.I.) finished 30th in the weight throw (12.19m).

In upcoming action, RIC will compete at the 2024 NEICAAA Championship.
