Pats, Titans aim to bounce back; Hawks look to keep rolling

All three Warwick schools are in action this week, though some have different motivations than others. Pilgrim has been inactive for a couple weeks after a washout at Smithfield, so it looks to avoid rust against a stout Westerly team. Toll Gate will look to rebound from a tough, 40-6 defeat at the hands of Burrillville. Hendricken, on the other hand, is fresh off another blowout against St. Ray’s, 41-7. The Pats and Titans are seeking to swing momentum back their way, while the Hawks keep laser-focused on the path to an undefeated season and seventh consecutive championship.

Pilgrim (1-1 in D-II) was supposed to have an arduous task on its hands last week, but instead ended up sitting on its hands. A non-league contest with Division III power Smithfield was postponed because of unsatisfactory field conditions, leaving both sides idle for the week. The inactivity doesn’t bode well for the Pats, as they have Westerly (2-1) coming to town on Friday night at 7. The Bulldogs have responded well after a season-opening, 49-18 loss against Moses Brown. They have since blasted opponents for a combined 98 points in two games, sailing above .500 on its way to Warwick. Pilgrim will have its hands full with running back Jalen Valentin, who scored four total touchdowns in a 49-0 win over East Greenwich last week. Given the Pats’ problems through the air against East Greenwich (four TD passes allowed in the first half), Westerly can take advantage of its dominant ground game to set up the pass. The Pats will have the unenviable duty of containing a Westerly team that has looked like an offensive juggernaut the past two weeks. It will be close for most of the night, but the Bulldogs may pull away down the stretch.

Prediction: Westerly 35, Pilgrim 14

Toll Gate (1-2 in D-III) will look to respond the same way it did after its first loss of the season. The Titans were handed a 28-15 defeat from North Providence to begin the year before crushing Scituate 36-14. Toll Gate will need that same spirit after a forgettable game against Burrillville that saw the Titans allow two touchdowns in the final one minute and 30 seconds of the opening half. They will embark on already their third road game of the year, this time at Central Falls at 6 p.m. on Friday, before returning home to Warwick Vets. The Warriors began the league schedule with two close victories, a 33-26 triumph over Hope and a 7-6 edging of North Providence. Much like the Titans, though, Central Falls will be coming off a loss. The Warriors fell 45-19 at the hands of Tiverton last week, so both sides enter Friday’s contest attempting to avoid a losing streak. Leo DaVaiga caught two touchdown passes against Tiverton, so he could be a threat in the vertical game. The Titans’ secondary will have to be the key to the game against Central Falls after struggling versus Broncos’ quarterback Zach Lefebvre. Anthony Vann threw three interceptions, but this is an anomaly for him. The Titans will bounce back offensively, but I believe the Warriors’ ability to win tight games give them the edge.

Prediction: Central Falls 27, Toll Gate 18

Another Friday, another win for Hendricken. St. Ray’s scored first, but Hendricken scored several times after that and saw its defense lock down the Saints’ running game. The Hawks won 41-7, and they have now outscored opponents 104-14 so far this year. This Friday shouldn’t be any different, but Hendricken is ready for any surprises. The six-time reigning champions soar over to their home away from home, Cranston Stadium, for a matchup with Cranston West (0-2 in D-I) on Friday at 7 p.m. It is a nearly impossible task to control the Hawks on every side of the ball for an entire game. The Saints kept them down for some of the first quarter, but with every strike from the Hawks, the opposition found it harder to countervail. West has had its struggles this year, most recently in a 41-6 loss to South Kingstown. The Falcons lost quarterback Nick Dionizio to a collarbone injury, and the offense has not been able to recover. The defense, led by Will Such, has had flashes of brilliance, notably a first-half shutout of Portsmouth on opening night. However, that game was a microcosm for how the season has gone: The offense has not been able to put much together. The Hawks’ defense, which is comprised of numerous future D-I college players, is too stout for a young crew at West.

Prediction: Hendricken 35, Cranston West 6
