What Makes a Community Champion?

Meet Santa Paul, a symbol of inspiration and kindness, whose life continues to be a series of remarkable chapters. As a young native of Rhode Island, Santa Paul pursued his academic and athletic goals at the University of Rhode Island, where he played first base.

His passion for sports slowly began to split time with his passion for giving back. After graduating, Evans pursued his love for baseball by acquiring the role of coach at Roger Williams for two years and Providence College for eight years. When his collegiate coaching career wrapped up, Santa Paul began a new chapter of teaching physical education at St. Peter’s School in Warwick for over 30 years, along with dedicating himself to reach the rank of Lieutenant within the Warwick Fire Department.

Evans fully retired after three amazing decades of serving and protecting his community that he loved. However, his story was far from over. Evans discovered a new calling that would bring joy to the young and old, acquiring the name of Santa Paul. Whether it’s visiting schools or nursing homes, Santa Paul continues to spread the magic of Christmas and create a sense of unity. This former college athlete turned community champion reminds us all that the spirit of generosity and bringing joy to others defines the holiday spirit.

Here is a Q&A between Brett Taylor and Santa Paul.

BT: Looking back, what advice would you give your younger self?

SP: As the years go by so fast I have learned that NO ONE is promised tomorrow. From Pilgrim HS classmates, students, brother firefighters and especially family, I wish I would’ve realized that sooner in my life. Life is just so precious, don’t waste time worrying about the little things that in the end are not really that important. Family and health are the keys to happiness.

BT: Beyond your achievement in sports, what inspires you to give back to your community as well as encourage others to do the same?

SP: Being a Warwick firefighter, serving the people of Warwick and all the guests that pass through our city was an honor that I took very seriously. Once a firefighter, always a firefighter. Giving back to others that need it: the sick, injured, the elderly, the lonely, and those with special needs is something we all should do if we have the ability, resources, time, and energy.

BT: You, as a former coach and athlete, continue to be a positive influence on so many individuals and encourage them to make a difference in their community. What are some examples of your contributions made and causes that are important to you?

SP: About 17 years ago I took an oath to create happiness, spread love and make fantasies  come to life in the true and sincere tradition of the Santa Claus Legend. I am blessed to be able to hear the secret dreams of both children and adults, from the inner city to the Mansions of Newport and everywhere in between. Wearing the “Red Suit” is such a privilege. Nothing better than bringing Christmas Joy to those in need. Some of the requests are difficult and sad as Santa tries his best to bring a spirit of understanding and compassion.

Santa Paul has written a Christmas children’s book called “Please, Just Leave the Glass”, now available on Amazon.

Santa, holiday, sports
