Locals lead RIC swim to 5th place finish

Senior Rebecca Fyrer (Cranston) finished second in the 200-yard medley relay (2:05.74), sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:25.39), 11th in the 500-yard freestyle (6:34.09), 19th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:16.28) and 24th in the 200-yard freestyle (2:27.36). Rhode Island College opened the 2023 season with a fifth place finish at the Roger Williams Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Anna Vygoder (Lincoln) finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke and as part of the 200-yard medley relay

Vygoder finished second in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.22) and the 200-yard medley relay (2:05.74), sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:25.39) and 10th in both the 200-yard IM (2:35.24) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:01.40).

Senior Meghan Laflamme (Smithfield) finished second in the 200-yard medley relay (2:05.74), sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:25.39), 20th in the 50-yard freestyle (28.90) and 26th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:05.63).

Senior Alina Krafton (Wakefield) finished second in the 200-yard medley relay (2:05.74), sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:25.39), 19th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:04.32) and 21st in the 200-yard freestyle (2:26.22).

Senior Marta Matzko (Rumford) finished seventh in the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:20.97),  19th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:29.85),  25th in the 200-yard IM (3:05.48) and 26th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:28.10).

Freshman Nicole Sutherland (Attleboro, Mass.) finished seventh in the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:20.97),  27th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:39.35), 33rd in the 50-yard freestyle (36.01) and 36th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:20.03).

Freshman Elizabeth Shepard (Smithfield) finished seventh in the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:20.97),  23rd in the 100-yard butterfly (2:05.08), 36th in the 50-yard freestyle (36.38) and 40th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:30.61).

Freshman Abigail Steinhilber (Warwick) finished seventh in the 200-yard freestyle relay (2:20.97), 37th in the 50-yard freestyle (36.86) and 39th in the 100-yard freestyle (1:28.27).

Sophomore Morgan McCann (Pawtucket) finished 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:22.02), 16th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:19.68) and 20th in the 200-yard IM (2:42.70).

Sophomore Olivia Landry (Lincoln) finished 22nd in the 100-yard butterfly (1:48.69), 40th in the 50-yard freestyle (41.40) and 43rd in the 100-yard freestyle (1:34.80).

Freshman Ivy Par (Pawtucket) finished 39th in the 50-yard freestyle (40.83) and 42nd in the 100-yard freestyle (1:31.92).

Five Anchorwomen earn LEC awards

Rhode Island College sophomore Erica Botelho (Greenville), senior Lauren Macera (Cranston), senior Amiah Sommer (Cumberland), junior Amara Devine (Greenville) and senior Anna Vygoder (Lincoln) were recognized by the Little East for their respective performances in women’s tennis during the 2023 season.

Botelho was named First Team All-Little East in both singles and doubles. She was 10-4 and primarily No. 2 singles and 11-4 at primarily No. 1 doubles.

Macera was named First Team All-Little East in doubles and Second Team All-Little East in singles. She was 8-4 at No. 1 singles and 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.

Sommer was named First Team All-Little East in doubles and Second Team All-Little East in singles. She was 8-3 at primarily No. 3 singles and 12-3 at primarily No. 2 doubles.

Devine was named First Team All-Little East in doubles. She was 11-3 at primarily No. 5 singles and 12-3 at primarily No. 2 doubles.

Vygoder was named to the Little East Women’s Tennis Sportsmanship Team. She was 13-1 at No. 3/4 singles and 10-4 at primarily No. 3 doubles.

Head Coach Adam Spring’s team wrapped up the 2023 season with a 12-3 overall record and a 7-1 (second place) mark in the Little East. The Anchorwomen lost in the finals of the Little East Championship, 5-0, to No. 1-seeded UMass Boston on Oct. 21.
