Shorthanded Pats fall to Oakers

The Pilgrim boys soccer team is still looking to build some momentum this season and dropped a 3-0 shutout to Coventry last week on the road.

The Oakers would score late in the first half to take a 1-0 lead into the break, then would control the second half and add two more insurance goals to run away with the win.

Pilgrim was backed up for most of the contest and struggled to come up with scoring opportunities throughout the second half. The Pats are currently shorthanded with injuries which contributed to their struggles producing offense.

“We don’t have the forward power to keep the ball away from them. Whatever goes up comes straight back down. I was just disappointed in the lack of energy. Right now, we’re limited in talent with two injuries and two guys moving to premier clubs, we knew that going in. We knew we had to make up for the loss of quality with work rate and we just didn’t do it tonight. They did it well against Narragansett, they worked their tails off, but today we were flat and got nothing out of it,” said Pilgrim coach Bill Carroll after the loss.

Pilgrim dropped to 3-3 with the defeat. Although the team is still in the playoff picture, it is looking for answers with a crop of young players and multiple starters still working their way back from injury.

The Pats beat Narragansett the previous game in a 2-1 outing. Jonathan Lopes and Jackson Bromage scored goals in the win while Declan Bragg racked up 12 saves in net.

Pilgrim’s next game was against Hope on Wednesday, but the results were not available at press time. Carroll hopes to see the club play with greater urgency moving forward, regardless of experience and talent.

“It doesn’t make a difference, if you’re good enough and you’re ready, then you’re going to play, even if you’re a freshman. I don’t worry about age. The kids just need to come out and do it,” Carroll said. “We know what we’re up against this year, every game is going to be tough but we should be able to compete. They didn’t do that today.”
