Titans look to rebound after uneven start

Posted

The Toll Gate girls basketball team entered the season coming off a semifinal appearance last winter and is looking to return to make a deep playoff run once again.

Toll Gate sits at 3-3 in league play so far this winter and has had an up and down start, facing some of the division’s top teams while dealing with starters that have missed time due to illness. The Titans are expected to be back to full health in the coming week and are looking to find their footing as they enter the thick of the Division III playoff race.

“We are definitely getting better. I’m pleased with the progress that they’re making. It’s been fits and starts. We’ve had girls sick, we are down three starters but we’re hoping they’ll be back. We’re really looking forward to the second half of the season,” said coach Jim Areson.

Back in the fold for Toll Gate is senior Adeline Areson. Adeline Areson was projected to be the team’s top producer last season but suffered a knee injury that sidelined her for the duration of the winter. Now she is back and has led the team in scoring, averaging 19 points per game. Also in the mix is last year’s breakout player Dulce Garcia at point guard, along with veterans Amanda Preston and Mary McNulty.

Jim Areson has been pleased with the development of the starting lineup and feels that the club is about to turn the corner with consistency and good health.

“(Adeline) has done well. There are times where she has tried to do too much, but lately she has really played within herself and has moved the ball more. Dulce Garcia has been playing great, she has stepped in and has been our number one defensive stopper and offensively she’s had some really good games.  Amanda Preston has been playing well and Mary McNulty has really come on as of late. I’m looking forward to seeing how she progresses. If they just keep progressing, then things are going to be good,” said Jim Areson.

Like last winter, Division III appears to be up for grabs between four or five teams. North Smithfield and Narragansett currently occupy first and second place, respectively, while reigning champ Pilgrim still poses a threat.

The Titans’ goal will be to improve each night and peak during the playoffs, according to Jim Areson.

“Our ball security has gotten better throughout the season. Every day we’re getting better and I think by the end of the season, we’re going to be a tough out,” said Jim Areson.” The league is so competitive, so balanced and anyone can beat anyone on any given night. There’s no dominant team in our league. That’s why we just need to keep getting better. If they can keep progressing together, then we can do some damage in the playoffs.”
